Simple Wisdom Tip #23: Why People Fail with Goals and Objectives

There is much discussion about why so few of us successfully use goals and objectives in our work and our lives. Last year, a new book, The Four Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey and Jim Huling cited four main reasons that I think are compelling. They are:

  1. They don’t know the goals (no goals, too many goals, or unclear goals).
  2. They don’t know how to achieve them (not broken into implementable steps).
  3. They don’t keep score (don’t know if they are on track or not).
  4. There are not held accountable (boss not tracking).

If you would like to enhance your skills at using goal-setting to become more successful and get more done, perhaps this can help. Or, contact us for some individual help.
