Simple Wisdom Tip #67: Measure Performance To Get It

To get solid performance, you need to set clear, measurable goals and then measure and report progress on them.  My friend Lee Corder shared with me this terrific quote (not sure whom the author is):

“When performance is measured, performance improves; when performance is measured and reported, the rate of performance accelerates.”

In my experience, most organizations do not do well in setting goals, do less well in measuring them, and do even worse at reporting the results.  If teams, units, departments or organizations could become skilled at this discipline, they would likely move rapidly forward.
